Moscow, October 21, Interfax – Three as yet unidentified men have attacked Russian Orthodox priest Alexy Rybakov, who serves at the Protection of the Holy Virgin church in the German city of Bochum, the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations said on its website.

The priest was returning after a religious service in Dusseldorf when he was stopped by the attackers near the apartment building where he lives with his wife and two children.

Father Alexy was dressed in a cassock and was carrying a suitcase with bread and wine for a communion service. The assailants began yelling insults, and one of them spat at the priest and hit him in the chest. They fled when Father Alexy called the police from his cell phone.

Father Alexy has already been the target of insults in the Bochum neighborhood, which is populated mostly by people from Muslim countries, a spokesman for the Russian Orthodox Church’s representative office in Germany said.

Archbishop Longin of Klin, representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Germany, has forwarded a letter to the city authorities, asking them to help identify the attackers as soon as possible.

“These insults and violence were directed against a person who is not only a civilian, but also an Orthodox priest,” Archbishop Longin said in his letter.
